For the diagnosis elm327 is good for bmw I recommend looking for the version 1.4 or higher,to map or bdm but you have to open the ecu or mpps.

I honestly for the bmw I discouraged elm, and it is a toy but I have recommended, as a minimum, autocom.

as a programmer I suggest mpps excellent price and good quality

definitely autocom ? much better since? on that car can handle almost all x with regard to the elm could only control the ecu but then it also depends on the type of software that you would use..I in his place I would start to buy the autocom.
