Well in the workshop have specific tools, even if apparently the software "amateur" have nothing to envy. However the connector ? always, a 16pin that connects to the diagnostic socket.
We had a problem of which lights are on on a thesis, and we went into the garage...the program was similar (if not equal) to the fiat ecuscan...see? as for me, I ask for me to activate...if the price ? relatively low do senn? I buy the elm...
For that which costs a ELM I'd take it anyway. Maybe the bluetooth, cos? there "games" with some software on the phone and see all of those parameters "unnecessary" but beautiful :D
